STARS OF THE KONKANNI STAGE: CHITRA SHIRVAIKER e ALPHONSO

 By Wellington Dias.

Chitra Alphonso e Shirwaiker ( originally from Kepem, married to Tommy Alphonso from Vasco and having 2-kids), realizing her acting talents used to act in her school dramas and later took part in the Kala Academy tiatra competitions and recalls first acting in Jose Rod's drama "Punn Kiteak" in the year 1989. Chitra, having finished her M.Com mentioned about teaching at the Higher Secondary School at Curtorim.

She mentioned working with a lot of directors which include Jose Rod, Anthony San, Rosario Rodrigues, Jack Ferry, Milagres de Chandor, Mike Mehta, Pascoal Rodrigues, Junior Nelson (Tommy), Philip Almeida and others. One drama She mentioned about acting in together with her husband Tommy was "Sukh".

Chitra had to say that She felt comfortable working with Jose Rod as he used to personally guide her and feels that She learnt a lot from him and according to her the other director she's felt comfortable working with was Pascoal Rodrigues.

At the time of the interview, Chitra mentioned about "Fullancho Turo", a musical show, which She and Tommy were currently staging and it seems they stage the same every year.

When queried if there was any rivalry between the actresses, She mentioned that there could be, but added that She could not pin-point the same and further added that She always made it a point to go for all the dramas and appreciate the other artistes.

When asked of her plans, She said that She wanted to direct her own drama but mentioned about wanting to do so with small children and not with adult artistes as She felt that the adult artistes had their egos and felt that each one felt he / she suited a particular role while the director usually had something else in mind.

According to Chitra, her one dream is to have a Children's theatre in Goa, as She feels that there are a lot of very talented Children and if guided properly, had to say that we could see some very good artistes come up and with this the Konkanni stage could be made a force to reckon with and lastly added that the Government should do something in this regard by providing its support.
