Sangodd festivities mark St Peter feast

Mapusa June 30: Prominent singers of the Konkani stage and local amateurs entertained huge crowds that gathered on the banks of the Sinquerim creek, Orda-Candolim for the traditional Sangodd on the feast of St Peter on June 29.

The Sangodd, a musical show staged on a floating stage of three canoes, had a beautifully crafted chapel in the background and a live band to accompany the Konkani singers. Mercifully, the Rain Gods stayed home and the sunny afternoon accorded the huge crowd merry entertainment. The songs, sometimes with noble themes, sometimes with naughty lyrics, were as diverse as the costumes the entertainers wore.

Veteran singer, Young Chico came immaculately dressed and sang melodiously about Goa’s tourism related ills. Aniceto, less formally attired, delighted with his song on today’s children and their morals. The so-called “Jet-speed singer,” William de Curtorim drew howls of laughter with his biting satire of Goan politicians. And “Naughty Boy” T Britton showed he has a nifty way with bawdy lyrics. Fatima “Bushka” (Young Chico’s daughter) was the lone lady-singer of the evening. Another artiste of the Konkani stage, Hortencio, sang about the ill-effects of plastic on the environment.

The Sangodd, set sail around 4 p.m. at the Orda creek after members of the Orda community offered their traditional prayers at St Peter’s chapel near the riverbank. Aniceto sang the opening chorus titled Bhurgim and was followed by William de Curtorim. Then sang Young Chico, T Britton, Hortencio and Bai Bushka.

While entertainment from the veterans was assured, the local duo of Damiao and Pele were surprise-hits especially with their risque number ‘Aunty.’ Albert Cabral, who compered the show, also sang well. Some of the others who sang were Manuel (Soro) and Alvito Araujo (Pap Saib). Agnelo Dias, supported by Mathias Mascarenhas on the trumpet, and others provided the music. As the floating-stage drifted down the meandering creek, nature in the form of the lush riverbank-greenery, provided the perfect backdrop.
