Konkani Morais gets lifetime achievement award

PANAJI: A proponent of Konkani language, whose dedication to the cause virtually made the language his first name, got a lifetime award for his active service to Goa and its official language, spoken in scattered pockets of India's west coast.

Antonio da Piedade Morais, popularly called "Konkani" Morais, has been bestowed the Jezvit Antonio Pereira Konknni Puroskar (JAPKP) for the year 2002 by the Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr (TSKK), a linguistic research centre run by Jesuit priests, some four kilometres from here.

Morais has been actively involved in making Konkani the official language of
Goa.

He had fought for the inclusion of Konkani in the eighth schedule of the Indian Constitution and had lobbied for use of Konkani in primary education.

In 1987, Konkani was included among India's 18 national languages recognised under the constitution.

"He is known for his love for Konkani and as a dedicated silent worker of Konkani for four decades. Since there are many people with the surname Morais, he is lovingly known as 'Konkani Morais'," said TSKK.

About five million people in the country's west coast such as south coastal Karnataka, pockets of coastal Maharashtra and some migrants in Mumbai are known to speak this language.

It is written in five different scripts, including Devnagri, Kannada and Roman.

A government employee, Morais has been involved with the Konkani Bhasha Mandal, a body promoting the language in Goa where Portuguese, Marathi and now English have been dominating public life and the media.

Under his leadership, the Konknni Obheas Kendr (language study centre) held eight exhibitions of Konkani books, manuscripts, magazines and newspapers within and outside Goa.

During the late 1960s, when the status of Konkani as a language independent from Marathi was disputed, he coaxed then Sahitya Akademi President Suniti Kumar Chatterji in getting the first-hand information on Konkani.

Morais is also known to have played an active role during the opinion poll in 1967 in restoring Goa's independent identity, when plans were on to merge it with neighbouring Maharashtra.
