GOAN WELFARE SOCIETY - MAY BALL QUEEN 1998

The Goan Welfare Society (GWS), held its sixth annual May Queen Ball at the Messilah Beach Hotel's "Al-Habiba" ballroom on 07th May 1998, with over 600 guests from all walks of life, including sponsors gracing the function.

GWS President Wilson Coelho while addressing the guests acknowledged one and all present and thanked them in making the May Queen Ball a grand success. He also thanked Tony Figueiredo - the BENEFACTOR of the Society, Mr. and Mrs. Alphonso - its patrons, the Chief guest - Air India's Regional Manager - Paresh Pewekar, and all the sponsors as well.

On behalf of the GWS, he felicitated Gladys Monteiro (an active member of the Goan Community) due to leave for the U.S. shortly and presented her with a commemorative plaque.

Orlando D'Mello kept the guests in the mood with his compering while the TOP-RANKS & the SCORPIONS kept the crowd tapping their feet & dancing to the tunes until the wee hours of the morning with scintillating music.

All the pretty gals attired in their gorgeous gowns eagerly awaited the beauty pageant, wherein more than thirty contestants catwalked across the Ballroom in their most alluring smiles, drawing appreciative cheers & wows from the crowd.

The contestants were judged on their beauty, poise & the catwalk by a panel of three judges namely Ephesian Waters, Minoo Patel & Mamta Karla.

Later, the list was trimmed to 11 semi-finalists, who were judged on their beauty, intelligence etc.

Finally, Shehnaz Sanjana, Sherryl Serrao, Candida Pereira, Minali - Bajaj & Analy Furtado made it to the finals. Each of the finalists were escorted on to the dance floor for the final round by five macho guys.

The judges must have had a tough time making up their minds as who to crown the 1998 May Queen and it was the questionnaire round that clinched the Crown of the May Queen for Minali Bajaj a tall & dusky beauty, keeping her cool when asked about the Characterisitics for a Man to be successful, her retort was that Happiness, Love and Acceptance are the three important characteristics a man requires to be highly successful in life. Elaborating on these topics, stated that "HAPPINESS", is what one should share with one another. "LOVE" is what a man should fancy from his woman and finally as regards "ACCEPTANCE" had to say that without being accepted in the world whether by the society or your family, the mission of being influenced by your man, will remain incomplete.

Analy Furtado was the Ist Runner-Up while Sherryl Serrao had to settle for IInd Runner-Up's slot.

All the Winners received loads of gifts which included Air-tickets, Gold Pendants etc. courtesy of the various sponsors.

Some of the guests walked away with prizes for the novelty dance & other Spot prizes.

The May Queen Ball went on till the break of dawn.

Welly.
