MARGAO: The colourful and impressive parade of floats were witnessed by
thousands of carnival fans who flocked to Margao from various parts of south Goa
here on Sunday evening. With the coming of king Momo in the city, the three-day
festival of fun, frolic and revelry began with full force.
The Margao carnival festival headed by Joseph Dias, has made elaborate arrangements to celebrate the carnival with pomp and gaiety. Throughout the float parade, everything went off smoothly and there was no traffic congestion in the heart of the city. Over 50 colourful floats accompanied by music and dance were led by King Momo. They rode past the route from Holy Spirit to the Municipal building. Among those that gathered to witness the carnival floats parade comprised of locals, tourists from India and foreign countries.
Alex Rasquinha, South Goa SP along with his squad of police officers was present at the venue guiding floats entering the city.
The stage near the municipal building where prize distribution was held was decorated. All along the municipal building, nearby areas of south Goa and the collector's office, people were keen to take a glimpse of the float parade.
The Margao carnival festival committee organised floats in three categories, traditional, sponsored and Club institute. Prizes of Rs 1,95000 were given away. The mask competition was also held wherein three prizes of Rs 2,000, Rs 1,500, and Rs 1,000 were given. The hijack of Indian Airlines plane, Kargil Intrusion, Environment tourism promotion, traditional Goan life, health education were depicted in the tableaux that featured in the parade.
Several ministers and MLAs were also present for the float parade. On March 6 which is the second day of the carnival, the traditional Khells will be held, followed by a musical evening.
