HE QUIPS that his wife gets real `gorom' (hot), when she sees the stuff he's doing. His children too, aren't particularly in favour and, of course, space and room is not on his side either.

But bookworm Brazinho Saores is unconcerned. Primarily because, of this indomitable quality called perseverance. "Nothing will ever come between me and my love for the Konkani language," he maintains. He is 57, has been smitten by the bug since he was 18 and the inspiration is still there.

For what we have here is an ordinary man with extraordinary pursuits. So although he has the looks of your neighbour, talks and walks like him as well, yet... this man is a different manuscript altogether. Just as nobody compares to him, nobody's bookshelf compares either. For to Brazinho Saores goes the distinction of owning over a thousand books in Konkani -- from novels, poems, dramas, science fictions, short stories, tiatres, to dictionaries, annuals, magazines, why even RTO guidebooks, he has them all.

Meeting him was like taking a page out of some Good Samaritan literature. Everyone seemed to know him and they all wanted to help out with directions. So by the time we made it to his home in Ubo Dando, Santa Cruz, there were quite a number of do-gooders in tow.

Clad in a spotless banyan and shorts was Soares, a lean man, with spectacles firmly fixed on his nose, and a smile that brought relief to the hollows in his face. He, his wife and pet mongrel with welcoming grins (growls) beckoned one inside. A smallish house it is, but nice and homely, with the aroma of `dhump' (incense) wafting through and the buzz of Zee-TV in the background. Very lived in.

It wouldn't take much to guess that his most prized possessions -- his books -- enjoy the pride of place in his living room. Reclining pretty in plastic jackets are the books. Some of which date back to the turn of the century.

Gorvassi Oiz, a text on medicine for lay people, the oldest in the collection, was published in 1900, By M/s. E.S.Norton and Co. "And I have books by the legendary `Pai Romansicho', C.S.Borges, G.X.Pereira, Eliot Dale, Reginald Fernandes...." avers Soares. In fact it was in connection with `Bab' Fernandes' first death anniversary that Soares surfaced once again with his third book exhibition.

His first (if one recalls), held at Institute Piedade, in February 1989, was organised to mark 100 years of the Konkani novel. The second exhibition also commemorated an event. On April 25, 1992, the tiatr turned golden and Soares was there -- exhibiting at Kala Academy, the works of eminent `tiatrists' like B.F.Cabral's - Gabruchi Sasumai or Reginald's - Desmond: Dishacho Munis, Ratcho Devchar.

Held at St. Anthony's Hall, Siolim on November 13, this year, his third exhibition showcased 97 of the 200 books written by Reginald (in Konkani), as well as some of his short stories and contributions to other newspapers. In addition on display were personal letters addressed to Soares. "I have been fascinated by his writing," grins the book beau. "That's how I have so many of his romances." But why bother, amassing so much? (Irreverent perhaps, but you have to know.)

Exasperated, he repeates that he "loves the language". Anything he chances to spot in Konkani, he wants. He busy either at bookshops, exhibitions, or visits `raddi' (waste paper) shops, or picks up some treasures from old folks' libraries.

"Why I got six of Reginald's books from his neice's fireplace," he exclaims. His major haunts used to be Casa Popular at Panjim, Raikar at Margao and a bookshop called Ave Maria in New Sonapur, Bombay. "The latter has probably closed down," he avers. For this is many years ago, when Soares was a lab analyst drawing a salary of Rs 25 a month.

So you see, there are some things money just has to buy. Today he works in the capacity of a lift operator at the GMC. Gets home at 4 something and then it's books, books, books. His Sundays too are booked.

As his son narrates, tending to his treasure is akin to therapy. "Every Sunday he cleans the cupboard, it's a ritual, almost." Operation Clean Up involves removing books from the steel Satpurush cupboard, fussing and mothering them and adding the all important camphor balls.

Soares is no mean writer himself, having contributed to more than 60 Konkani magazines and newspapers, both in Goa and Bombay. He has also compiled a book of poems titled Mogachi Dovlot and has written a drama, Mogacho Xevott Simittrint. Besides, he has bagged many a prestigious prize in state competitions. Two plays penned by the politician who is now the Speaker of the Goa Assembly! Movall Vikh is a particularly biting critique of the impact of tourism on Goa, and is written by someone no less than a former sarpanch of a village in the thick of the tourism book (Candolim).

For those speakers and fans of Konkani, there's a good book just out. Mukhamvaram/Movllam is labelled (by its publishers) a "rare book in Konkani" and brings across traditional sayings, proverbs, idioms, colloquial sentences, popular quotes, indirect hints etc. It is compiled by J.B.Sequeira of Mangalore, and is printed in three major Konkani scripts -- Kannada, Nagari and Romi. Unfortunately there's no English translation, so you need to know at least one of these scripts (or a little Konkani) to follow it. --Fred. "DOR MHOINEACHI ROTTI" is the oldest Roman script publication among all the existing Roman script publications. It is a monthly magazine started in Karachi about a century back. For about 50 years it was printed on paper size bigger than A4 having many pages. I was fortunate to read many of the preserved magazines from the time of its inception. After the independence of India the late Cardinal Gracias managed to bring it to Bombay from where it started serving the Konkani Catholics. Later on after the liberation of Goa it was shifted to Goa. Well known writer and intellectual priest Fr. Moreno Desouza S.J. is looking after it now as an Editor. Currently it is published from Bom Jesus Basilica under the editorship of Fr. Moreno. It is a long time now Fr. Moreno is looking after this magazine the size of it since many years now is reduced to smaller than A4 size and number of pages are also cut down from the earlier ones. Since its inception till now it gives very good coverage not only on Christian aspects but also on many other important topics by some of the finest and best Konkani writers mainly the priests. For many of the readers it is really found to be an intellectual Rotti. This magazine should be encouraged and read by all the lovers of Konkani especially the Catholics. It carries our heritage and should not be allowed to die a silent death as many have faced in the past. Those interested in reading this magazine can ask for it directly by subscribing it.
